An economic analysis of using wetlands for treatment of shrimp processing wastewater ラ a case study in Dulac, LA

چکیده
Two crucial environmental problems in Louisiana are high rates of wetland loss and surface water pollution. Using wetlands for wastewater treatment can address both of these concerns by reducing the amount of pollutant discharge into surface water bodies while simultaneously serving to restore and replenish deteriorating marshes by enhancing productivity and accretion. Using wetlands for wastewater assimilation can also result in considerable cost savings when compared with conventional, non-wetlands wastewater treatment options. In order to determine these cost savings in a specific case, an avoided cost economic analysis was performed for two potential wastewater treatment options for a shrimp processor in Dulac, LA: (1) conventional, on-site treatment with dissolved air flotation (DAF); and (2) wetland treatment. Annualized costs for DAF implementation are :$208 000/year for 25 years. Wetland treatment costs around 25% of DAF with an annual cost of :$63 000. Yearly savings would be almost $150 000. This is a capitalized cost savings of over $1.5 million. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Advanced Treatment of Meat Processing Wastewaters Using Microalgae
Introduction: Effluents of Meat processing are one of the untreated wastewaters containing high volumes of polluted components even after the primary and secondary treatments. The high cost of using the advanced treatment methods of the wastewaters has led the industry owners to release them in the nature without effective removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. In this study, an economic advanced ...
متن کاملRemoval of Pharmaceutical Products in a Constructed Wetland
Background: There is growing interest in the natural and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. While nutrient removal in wetlands has been extensively investigated, information regarding the degradation of the pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has only recently been emerging. PPCPs are widely distributed in urban wastewaters and can be removed to some extent by the con...
متن کاملAnammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance
This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...
متن کاملEffects of pistachio processing wastewater on treatment efficiency of urban wastewater using activated sludge process
Background: In this study, the effect of wastewater produced by pistachio processing in processing terminals on wastewater treatment plants with activated sludge process was investigated. Methods: The pilot of activated sludge was constructed at the laboratory scale similar to wastewater treatment plant in Kerman and it was investigated in different ratios of the wastewater of pistachio proces...
متن کاملPollutant removal by Canna Generalis in tropical constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment
Constructed wetlands have not been commonly used in Vietnam due to the lack of information in the selection of proper types of constructed wetlands, type of reeds, design parameters and performance efficiency, in tropical climates. This paper focuses on Canna generalis, which is a common reed and easy to grow both in water and wet land conditions. Two kinds of hybrid constructed wetlan...
